Catching up with the Mandalas, January edition

This is another piece of the catchup Monday Mandala Roundup series, for all the Patreon Monday Mandala posts.  Below, you’ll find the January ones, some full and some snippets.  Monday the 15th of January was so badly a Monday that it got two old-style doodles, but this was, overall, the month I got the hang of how to do and present these, as you can see.

Fan And Feather Mandala

My ducks are in a spreadsheet

I may not have mentioned that I was moving to a new office, trading spaces with someone else in the house, but that’s been a definite impact on my production and organization and blogging.  The good news is that I am, indeed, moved into my office!

I’m still working on making more art, but moving my office out of a temporary space it was shoehorned into during the migration and into the new space forced me to do a bit more organization and figuring out what and where and how many arts I have.  I even made a spreadsheet and put numbers after dollar signs!  That’s how serious it was.

The good news is that I am now in a place where I can put some physical things out for sale here in the digital world.  And thus, I present the first physical piece I completed in my new office …

Fan and Feather Mandala

This mandala is an excerpt from the February Coloring Book Page for my Second Circle patrons over on Patreon. I’ll unpack that sentence in a bit, but let me get the important details out of the way first:

Watercolor and pen on 140lb watercolor paper, 5″x5″
Price is: unframed $30, framed $38; includes shipping within the USA

Now, to unpack: I have a Patreon, for those who like to support my work directly, and my levels of patronage there are based on circles (it’s a theme, yes).  The special reward for Second Circle patrons is a new coloring book page every month, typically mandalas.  I used the center section of the February one to trace this hand-painted, hand-penned version.

Catching up with the Mandalas

Mini Mandalas

And So It Begins

Here is the first of the promised actual real hand-painted items for sale directly.

These are all done on Artist Trading Cards, specifically Bristol paper, with ink and watercolor.  Most are traced from existing mandalas, but one is 100% original. All of these are 2.5″ x 3.5″. Frames with mats are matted to 2″x3″. Frame without mat is 2.25″x3.25″.

Payment preferred via PayPal and includes shipping to the US only; please email me at info ‘at’ ninthcircle.net to confirm availability and shipping and all that.

This one is 100% original work – designed directly on the card with compass, ruler, and circle template and a lot of patience. $15 unframed, $20 framed.

Tentacle Mandala In Color

Flashback to a year ago

To put my last post about the art show in context … about a year ago, when I started doing more in physical media, I tried a bunch of different things.  Eventually, I got down to pulling out the watercolor gouache I got fifteen years ago.  So, I printed out a copy  of the Tentacle Mandala on some plain copy paper and went for it.

Just so we’re all clear, regular copy paper isn’t exactly suitable for watercolors, and I hadn’t done any gouache work in a long while (and that was in a substantially different context), and I was doing a lot of flying by the seat of my pants on color choices, but all in all, I really like the way it came out:

There wasn’t much I could do with this, other than privately admire it, since the paper buckled significantly when wet with paint, and yet, I loved the way the whimsically chosen colors played out for a so very very undersea, tentacle-y, shellfishy, with bonus pearls kind of theme.

Thus, when I finally figured out how LivePaint works in Illustrator, it was a pretty obvious choice to replicate this digitally.

The digitally colored version is available on RedBubble. While the glittered effect of the silver and gold paints doesn’t translate, I think it’s still pretty good.
